God started building
in the very beginning;
he made earth and heaven
his glory to display.
All was holy and good,
but we defiled it by sinning,
and from the place of his presence
we were driven away.
But the God of all grace
did not abandon our race,
for in temples of stone
his Spirit came to dwell.
And even greater than these--
the Son with whom he is pleased
Was born in the flesh as Immanuel!
Today God is building
on his chosen foundation:
The stone men rejected
he raised from the dead,
And we are God's house,
made of stones from all nations;
We are Christ's Body,
and he our Living Head.
As the wedding day draws near,
when our Beloved will appear,
Zion, his Bride,
is beautifully adorned.
The holy city descends,
and God's dwelling is with men,
And we forevermore shall look
on the face of our Lord!
